What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s landmark government-funded disability support program, administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIS provides individualised funding to eligible Australians under 65 who have a permanent and significant disability — giving participants genuine choice and control over the supports they access and the life they lead.
Unlike previous block-funded disability systems, the NDIS is built around you. You choose your registered NDIS providers, decide how your supports are delivered, and work toward goals that matter to you — whether that is greater independence, improved wellbeing, community connection, or employment.
Liberty Health Services is a trusted, registered NDIS provider in Queensland, delivering a broad range of NDIS support services including Supported Independent Living (SIL), community participation, personal care, domestic assistance, and STA/MTA respite care.
How Does the NDIS Work?
Once your NDIS access request is approved, the NDIA will work with you to develop a personalised NDIS plan. Your plan outlines your goals and the funding allocated across your support categories to help you achieve them. Plans are typically reviewed annually, or sooner if your needs or circumstances change.
NDIS funding is divided into three core support budgets:
- Core Supports — Everyday assistance including personal care, domestic support, transport, and community participation. This is the most flexible budget.
- Capacity Building Supports — Supports to build skills and independence over time, including therapy, employment support, and social participation programs.
- Capital Supports — Funding for assistive technology, home modifications, and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).
Your plan can be managed in three ways: Agency-managed (the NDIA pays providers directly), plan-managed (a registered plan manager handles your finances), or self-managed (you control your own funding). Our team can help you understand which management option best suits your situation.
What Supports Does the NDIS Fund?
The NDIS funds reasonable and necessary supports that are directly related to your disability, help you pursue your goals, and represent value for money. Key funded support categories include:
- Assistance with Daily Life — Personal care, domestic assistance, meal preparation, and Supported Independent Living (SIL) for those requiring support in a shared or sole-occupancy home.
- Community & Social Participation — Support to access community activities, social connections, education, and employment pathways.
- Improved Health & Wellbeing — Exercise physiology, dietitian services, and allied health supports to maintain your health.
- Improved Living Arrangements — Support coordination and Independent Living Options (ILO) to help you find and maintain suitable housing.
- Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) — Purpose-built or modified housing for participants with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.
- Assistive Technology — Equipment, aids, and devices that improve function and independence.
- Home Modifications — Physical changes to your home environment to improve access and safety.
- Support Coordination — Help to understand your plan and connect with the right providers and community services.
Liberty Health Services delivers supports across multiple NDIS categories, helping you access the full value of your plan and build a life that reflects your goals.
Am I Eligible for the NDIS?
To access the NDIS, you must meet the eligibility criteria set by the NDIA. You may be eligible if you:
- Are under 65 years of age at the time of your initial NDIS access request
- Are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category visa
- Have a permanent disability caused by a physical, intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or psychosocial impairment
- Experience a significant functional impact — meaning your disability substantially reduces your ability to carry out everyday activities
- Require support from another person, assistive technology, or specialised equipment due to your disability
The NDIA assesses eligibility based on functional impact, not diagnosis alone. You will need to provide supporting evidence from a treating health professional such as a GP, specialist, or allied health practitioner.
To begin, complete an Access Request Form (ARF) with the NDIA. Once approved, an NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) will help you build your first plan. Liberty Health Services can connect you with experienced support coordinators who will guide you through the entire process — from access request to plan implementation — ensuring you receive the supports you need from day one.
